//This is a one-on-one in-person outdoor weaving class for learning the traditional Maya Kaqchikel warping method held at our studio garden in central Antigua. Spanish, English, and Kaqchikel instruction are possible by the instructors. Please message us via WhatsApp at +502 5191 1991 or email us at hello@kakawdesigns.com to coordinate the date and time. We recommend 9:00-12:00noon to avoid harsh weather. We are located at 1a Avenida Sur #4B in Antigua Guatemala.//

We love one-on-one weaving sessions! And starting from the beginning, from warping and creating your own loom, is the best way to truly understand the mechanics behind backstrap weaving.

What to expect:

Participants are welcomed at our lush studio garden in Antigua. Teachers come prepared for the session with all the materials necessary to build a loom - cotton threads in a variety of colors, already prepared into balls. All the rods and sticks necessary for the backstrap loom, as well as the special chord used for the chocoy string heddle. The kit also includes a belt and rope so that the loom can easily be set up wherever you go. At the end of your class, we'll slip the rolled up loom into a "Happy Weaving" canvas bag created specifically for this purpose, to keep the loom safe for transport.

With the careful guidance of a master weaver, you'll learn how to arrange the threads on the warping board - counting the warp ends, creating the weaver's cross, making sure the tension remains even. After that, you will take the warp and get started on the loom set-up. Your teacher will guide you every step of the way.

By the end of the morning, you'll be all set to start weaving on the loom at your own pace.

This three-hour class includes:

  • All materials to warp and make your own loom to continue weaving. The size is approximately 9 inches wide and 23 inches long, like our Brocade Backstrap Loom Kit.
  • Private master weaver instructor (one-on-one)
  • A light snack
  • Our Backstrap Weaving Resources List for Beginners in PDF form full of links. The link to download will appear at check-out and will also be automatically sent to you via email after class.

Please note that all three hours will likely be dedicated to to the warping and setting up of the loom.  If possible, we recommend adding a two-hour weaving class for the following day so that you can master plain weave in the following session.

We recommend taking advantage of this intimate setting to practice your Spanish as much as possible :)

The most incredible weaving experience!

I had the most incredible experience - learning so weave from the incredible women who work at Kakaw. They were patient and inspiring teachers - from helping with colour choice to set up my loom to teaching me how to include motifs in the design, and even how to count in Spanish. The setting is delightful - a tranquil peaceful garden courtyard and the team who work at Kakaw made me feel so welcome. I wish I didn’t live as far away as I do - I would go back often! If you have even the smallest interest in weaving or textiles sign up for a course with Kakaw - you won’t be sorry!
