Vintage 17: Cinta Nebaj

This is an exquisite vintage handwoven headdress from the town of Nebaj. This piece would be traditionally worn intertwined with long hair, with pompoms adorning the top of the headdress when worn. This is a very special treasure piece to be cherished.

The headdress is handwoven on a backstrap loom with cotton threads; the tassels have some acrylic to add volume. The brocade patterns feature plenty of animals traditional from the area - can you spot them?

An interesting point to note is the decorative stitching at the ends of the cinta, above the pompoms. In Nebaj, men traditionally wear thick wool coats sewn by machine, with decorative machine stitching, also. It has become part of the traditional patterns of the town, though rather modern in nature (with sewing machines). The stitching seen here in this cinta mimics machine stitching, but if you look closely and both front and back, you'll see that it was done by hand.

Care: Hand wash separately and line dry inside out. Colors should not bleed, but best to be gentle to preserve the brocade stitches.
