Small group BARRILETE embroidery with Claribel! / Friday October 25th, 10am-12 noon
$30.00
//This is an in-person outdoor embroidery class with a "barrilete" twist, as it is the season of the Giant Kites! To learn more about this tradition in Sumpango, find Kelly's blog post. Class held at our studio garden in central Antigua. Claribel speaks Spanish, and English interpretation can be arranged with Kakaw staff. Do you have a question? Contact us via WhatsApp at +502 5191 1991//
Claribel is our friend from Sumpango, a town known for beautiful traditional neckline embroidery full of flowers, volcanoes, and other motifs reminiscent of the town's famous Barriletes, the giant kites flown for All Saints' Day. She is also a master embroideress with so much experience sharing her textile tradition with those interested. You can just feel how she radiates with pride and joy as she talks about the different traditional motifs and stitches, even from afar on your computer screen!
This 2-hour class includes:
- A canvas tote made by social project mi.eelo, pre-stenciled by Claribel for easy embroidery in the special barrilete (traditional giant kite) design
- A variety of naturally-dyed cotton threads
- A small snack in our garden
- A PDF guide with pre-recorded close-up videos of each of the stitches for review after class (the website will send you the download link after class)
The class will be held on Friday, Oct 25th from 10am-12noon Guatemala time with Claribel as the teacher and Evelyn as the facilitator and if necessary, translator. Our studio is located at 1a Avenida Sur #4B in Antigua Guatemala.
