Faja 1: Nahualá

This is a gorgeous vintage traditional faja <fa-ha> from the town Nahualá, Guatemala. Fajas are used as belts for traditional cortes (wrap skirts) and pants, if for men, though nowadays it is much less common for men to wear traditional handwoven outfits.

The base of this faja is cotton, with supplementary weft brocade woven on a backstrap loom in rayon and cotton blend. The result is a slight shine, elegantly seen in repetitive geometric shapes. This is a piece to be cherished, a traditional textile treasure.

This piece is being sold by our friend Fernando from Chichicastenango. Fernando and his family have a small textile treasure stores in their home town, a place filled with the most beautiful items imaginable. Currently because of travel restrictions due to COVID-19 both nationally and internationally, they have not had any local sales. Thus, the listing of some of the treasures on our site here on our Artisan Direct page.
