Looking to explore the vibrant open-air market in the highlands Quiché town of Chichicastenango for a textile-specific visit? We've got you covered. Learn the variety of textile traditions that exist in Guatemala - you'll see all the colors, motifs, uses, and techniques! This day begins and ends in Antigua, and includes private transport.
Your guide will take you first to the historic Catholic church, with the iconic flower vendors alongside the steps. Witness religious syncretism in present day. The rest of your visit can be catered toward your interest. Some options include:
- Introduction to our favorite shopping areas. Let us know if you have any special interests!
- Visit our friend Fernando and his store filled with textile treasures.
- Explore the daily market area full of fresh produce, tools, and materials that are in regular use in local life.
- Squeeze through the used textile portion of the market, where traditional güipiles, cortes, tzutes, fajas, and more can be found from almost all corners of the country. Your guide can help you in this shopping experience, as it can be overwhelming for new visitors!
- Stroll through the local cemetery, known to hold Maya ceremonies. Be mindful of this cultural experience.
- Visit the smaller Catholic chapel, which often hosts celebrations and ceremonies.
What's included?
- Private transport to and from Antigua with a trusted driver. Leave Antigua at 6am. Return approximately at 4pm-5pm in Antigua. Pick up and drop off at your hotel or Kakaw studio.
- An expert guide: one of our master weaver teachers and/or a local Kakaw staff member will facilitate this trip for you. Doña Everilda, Sucy, and Evelyn have all guided textile-loving visitors in Chichicastenango, and we are excited to further share our passions! (1 guide for upto 3 participants, and after that, 2 guides)
- A pre-trip 30min meeting before market day held at our studio in Antigua during open hours (M-F 9-4). We will go through a short Guatemalan textile tradition introduction, the logistics to the market day visit, and answer any relevant questions you may have.
