Vintage 10: Huipil San Antonio Aguas Calientes

The güipiles from San Antonio Aguas Calientes are some of the most coveted for their beauty and technique. Not only are the garments rich in brocade figures, they usually also feature the advanced double-sided brocade technique to varying degrees. See the images - for this piece, the shoulder patterns are in this weave. This technique requires time, patience, skill, and extra materials to complete. Truly a work of a master weaver! In this piece, the shoulders have been woven with the double-sided brocade technique.

The rest of the piece features geometric designs that are older in this town. This is a garment to be cherished, as more recent pieces have changed figures according to fashion.

All four selvages have been meticulously finished on the loom, showing excellent mastery by the weaver.

Brocaded figures include seeds, lowers, and geometric designs.

This piece is wearable, meaning that the neck opening is large enough for the huipil to be worn. Please do not cut this handwoven artwork as it is full of heritage and tradition.
