Vintage 1: Huipil Santa María Chiquimula

A beautiful vintage huipil from Santa María Chiquimula, handwoven on a backstrap loom.  Both of the warp selvages have been folded and secured with machine stitching.

Each of the two panels has been woven on a backstrap loom and then combined using a hand-embroidery technique called randa, stitch by stitch. Note that the randa stitches are only for about half of the length, the section that would traditionally be visible when worn, and the bottom half is left with simple machine stitching. The neckline has also been hand-embroidered, featuring a traditional pattern full of volcanoes.

This piece is wearable, meaning that the neck opening is large enough for the huipil to be worn. Its sides are currently unsewn, so it lays flat extended.
