Sandía Rebozo
$225.00
In preparation for the International Folk Art Market in 2023 we made unique color versions of our favorite handwoven rebozos. And the people clearly spoke - this sandía (watermelon) colorway was their favorite! So we decided to bring this piece online for a mini batch.
Dyed with natural dyes, including our favorite source for rouge -- cochineal. The cochinilla are insects that live on the paddles of cacti, and it is an incredibly labor-intensive process to grow them, harvest them, and prepare them for dyeing. All of that before the actual textile-creating steps. We are happy to be supporting a small cochineal-growing project in Guatemala.
Each rebozo has been handwoven on a backstrap loom after the dyeing of the warp with ikat designs. The fringes are carefully crafted with macramé knots.
Material: Naturally-dyed cotton.
Care: Wash by hand separately in cold water with gentle detergent. A little bit of running color is normal for the first couple of washes for naturally-dyed fibers. Lay flat or hang dry. We recommend storing away from direct sunlight when not in use.
