Huipil 60: Colotenango
$170.00
//A new Artisan Direct listing from Fernando in Chichicastengo!//
This is a gorgeous vintage huipil (traditional blouse) from Colotenango, Guatemala, being sold by our friend Fernando in Chichicastenango. The traditional brocade-woven huipiles from Colotenango feature lovely geometric shapes with maroon and white base in a "wearable" three-panel manner. Easy to wear with jeans or a skirt, it fits like US sizes XS or S.
This piece is handwoven with a blend of cotton and rayon, which results in a lovely drape. All four ends of each panel are cleanly finished, a sign of incredible backstrap weaving mastery. The sweet hand-stitched randa embroidery to combine the panels adds precious character. This is a beautiful piece to both wear and use as home adornment. The sides are not sewn shut for this piece, though that can easily be done by hand (let us know if you'd like us to do that for you).
Fernando and his family have a small textile treasure store in their hometown, a place filled with the most beautiful items imaginable. Currently, because of the lasting effects COVID-19 restrictions both nationally and internationally, they have not had many local sales. Thus, the listing of some of the treasures on our site here on our Artisan Direct page.
