Vintage 8: Huipil Quetzaltenango

A gorgeous pre-loved güipil from Xela (Quetzaltenango). The soft color combiation is especially appealing! This piece was handwoven on a backstrap loom, proven by the fact that all three of the panels have one clean warp selvage, which is not possible when woven on a footloom. The brocade designs are still woven row by row, poco a poco. The selvages on the other side have been cut and left loose.

The three panels were combined using a hand-embroidery technique called randa, stitch by stitch. The hand-embroidered neckline combines flowers and bird figures. A little bit of velvet fabric has been added to the neckline and the sleeves for extra accenting and comfort.

This type of huipil (traditional blouse) is regionally worn tucked in a gathered flowy corte (wrap skirt), and the combination is really beautiful. Note the modeled image for reference. But feel free to combine it with other kinds of skirts or jeans.

This piece is wearable, meaning that the neck opening is large enough for the huipil to be worn. Note that the huipiles from Xela run large - perfect for someone looking for a roomier fit.
