Cotzal Centerpiece: Naturally-dyed 1

//This is part of a collaborative mini collection of handwoven brocade beauties from San Juan Cotzal created with the naturally-dyed cotton threads that we love. //

This is a newly-created one-panel textile handwoven on a backstrap loom by Catarina in San Juan Cotzal. She is a member of a cooperative of talented weavers in the highlands Ixil town we work with.

We think the delicate macramé fringes (called "ventanitas" here, or "little windows") makes this piece great for decorating tables for dinner parties, or anywhere around the house for a cozy and elegant touch.

It has been a new challenge for the weavers to switch over to the naturally-dyed cotton threads that we provided them for this collection. With practice and patience, they have woven some gorgeous pieces that incorporate traditional brocade motifs from their town, and we are delighted to be able to offer naturally-dyed production now through this collaboration.

Note that each piece is a unique work of art, made using the same naturally-dyed cotton yarns. As such, the colors are the same but the brocade figures show the artists' creativity.
