Have you been wanting to get into the nitty gritty details of backstrap weaving? Spend a week learning from Maya Kaqchikel master weavers from San Antonio Aguas Calientes! This week-long course starts with warping on a traditional warping board and continues to cover the loom setup, plain weave, and brocade figures famous from the weavers' hometown. All taught in a one-on-one setting, this is the best way to advance at your own speed.
What's included?
- 5 days of one-on-one instruction with master weavers (All speak Kaqchikel and Spanish, with some English)
- Kakaw staff assistance with translation, facilitation, expert local input
- all materials to create your own loom
- a physical brocade sampler (textile piece) to take home
- a small snack every day
- 2 lunches together with the instructors (one home-cooked and one at a restaurant)
- transport to and from Antigua and San Antonio Aguas Calientes for the first day of the course
- a printed Antigua Guide with our favorite restaurants and stores for you to explore during your free time
- Access to our Intermediate Supplementary Weft Brocade Guide in PDF form
- Option to add a week-long stay at our studio during the course
Schedule:
Monday: Introduction and warping at Doña Everilda's home in San Antonio Aguas Calientes. This is all-day and includes a home-cooked meal.
Tuesday: Set up your loom in our central Antigua studio garden. Morning only.
Wednesday: Continue to set up your loom and/or practice plain weave. Morning only.
Thursday: Advance at your own pace! Plain weave? Brocade? Up to you! Morning only.
Friday: Advance at your own pace. Morning instruction, then finish with a lunch together with teachers in one of our favorite restaurants in town.
This is a small-group offer for personalized attention! Maximum 4 people for personalized one-on-one attention.
$710 per person. Remaining total is due by April 15th, 2025.

Course Cancellation Policy
If course attendance is canceled by the participant:
- Up to two months to the start date of the course: full amount in credit form for future travel with Kakaw Designs to be used within 365 days of the original trip dates, minus the non-refundable deposit.
- Less than two months to the start of the course: 50% trip cost in credit form for future travel with Kakaw Designs to be used within 365 days of the original trip dates, minus the deposit.
- Less than one month to the start of the course: no refund or credit.
- Delay in joining the group for any reason: no refund or credit for missed time in Guatemala.
- Early return home or disruption of travel with the group for any reason, including missed meals or group activities: no refund or credit and traveler is responsible for any extra expenses incurred (transportation, etc.).
