Practice Backstrap Loom Kit
$65.00
Learn how to weave on a traditional backstrap loom from the comfort of your home, or anywhere you'd like. Find instructions with pictures and videos on our blog, as well as tutorials on how to open and set up your loom.
These small looms are perfect for beginners. They already have beautiful ikat designs with naturally-dyed hues in the cotton warp, so with the most simple weave back and forth, your loom will look radiant. It already looks gorgeous without the weaving, so you really can't go wrong! When finished, the loom makes a beautiful wall hanging, a piece that you can share with your friends and family and explain the handmade process with personal experience.
Traditionally, the top end of the backstrap loom is attached to a tree to ground the weaver and connect with the earth. In practical terms, however, this is a small and portable loom system - you can take it with you and start weaving wherever you'd like.
The kit comes with all the tools you need for your first weaving. Weft thread included is naturally-dyed indigo cotton. The backstrap belt may vary between maguey (a natural succulent fiber) or a recycled material, depending on availability.
Come join us in Antigua Guatemala for in-person backstrap weaving classes! We also offer textile-rich travel itineraries throughout the country.

Hello,
It was a nice surprise to see the lovely packaging of the looms.
Unfortunately, I can't begin to weave before next august.
Sorry for my english, I hope you understand.
Creative greetings.

I discovered backstrap looms in Japan last year (the jibata loom) and fell in love with the principle. I have been wanting to develop my own ever since I discovered this can be done quite readily, but decided to purchase the Kakaw kit as a way to simplify the learning. The fact that it is all set up to use gives a huge boost to begin with. I am now constructing a loom twice as wide, but progressing with the kakaw loom initially. This is such an exciting enterprise! Am looking forward to learning other techniques with the backstrap also, brocade and also combining the backstrap with ikat dyeing.
Absolutely beautiful handmade backstrap looms!! I love them. Set up perfectly and came in the prettiest bag. So excited and honored to have these. ❤️
i was in antigua recently and wanted to start learning how to weave the beautiful textiles i saw everywhere. this is a wonderful beginning. the only criticism is that the sword had a few splinters, and caught the warp threads until i sanded it down a bit more. hoping to come to an intensive class in the coming year
I was nervous about ordering but it’s a really nice quality with a small bag to transport the loom in. I’m signed up for a zoom class next week - I can’t wait to try it out! It came to the US in less than a week!
