Along the shore of Lake Atitlán lies a town famous for birds. Güipiles are decorated with rich bird embroidery; the town in its indigenous Tzutujil language means "House of Birds." And yes, they really are surrounded by birds in Santiago Atiltán.
Tucked into the hills higher above the town, a handful of locals have taken to watching and caring for the beautiful resplendent questzal, the national bird of Guatemala. A nesting site has been visible in recent years, and we hope that the beautiful birds continue to have chicks every year.
Hand-embroidered by our friends at the same town of Santiago, we've named these earrings after one individual quetzal bird, lovingly nicknamed "Benjamín" by the local birding guides. Benjamín is identifiable even for visitors because, as you might guess, of his extra long tail feathers. Guatemalan quetzales are known to have the longest tails, but Benjamín's is by far the most beautiful around. Just like a shimmering feathered serpent when flying in the air.
