I recently had the incredible opportunity to take a backstrap loom weaving class in Antigua, Guatemala, and it was an experience I will treasure forever! My teacher, Eve, was not only a master weaver but also an extraordinary cultural ambassador. From the moment I stepped into the venue, operated by Kakaw Design Studio, I felt warmly welcomed and instantly at ease.
The setting was absolutely perfect—a lush, green patio surrounded by vibrant plants, where the workshop was held. Weaving outdoors in such a serene and beautiful environment added an extra layer of inspiration to the experience. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, making it the perfect place to learn and create.
Eve's passion for weaving was contagious, and her deep knowledge of the craft was evident in every lesson. She took the time to explain each step of the weaving process in detail, ensuring I understood not just the how, but also the why behind each technique. Her patience and encouragement made the entire learning experience so enjoyable and fulfilling.
But the class was about so much more than just weaving. Eve shared with me the rich traditions and history behind the patterns we were creating, giving me a deeper appreciation for the cultural significance of this beautiful art form. Our conversations went beyond the loom—we talked about different teaching methods, and she even shared some of her favorite cooking tips! It was like spending time with an old friend who had so much wisdom to impart.

I had the good fortune of attending a backstrap weaving class with Cristina. She was patient and thorough throughout the session and despite my fumbling Spanish, we were able to communicate with the assistance of Sucy. I look forward to continuing my practice with a take-home loom and am hopeful I will return for more classes in Antigua.
Doña Eve es increíble al enseñar con delicadeza y paciencia. Gran experta en su arte. Overall the experience was amazing. Great instruction, attention, and knowledge. After the workshop they treated us to cacao tea and bread which paired perfectly with the overcast weather.

As a sewing and fabric lover I had to take a backstrap weaving class with Doña Cristina. Luckily my weaving project was already prepared with the most beautiful colours and pattern. With a lot of patience and humour Cristina taught me all the steps and slowly I started seeing my progress, which is an amazing feeling. The more I improved, the more personal tips Cristina gave me to improve the quality of my weaving. I felt super at ease and relaxed, thanks to Cristinas lovely energy and in this super idillic garden.
