//This is a one-on-one in-person outdoor weaving class for learning the traditional Maya Kaqchikel warping method held at our studio garden in central Antigua. We love one-on-one weaving sessions! This three-hour class includes:
- All materials to warp and make your own small loom to continue weaving.
- Private master weaver instructor (Doña Lidia or Doña Everilda)
- A light snack
Please note that all three hours will likely be dedicated to to the warping and setting up of the loom - if you'd like to receive a class on weaving, please let us know to schedule that for another day. We recommend morning instruction to avoid harsh sun and rain.
MEET THE INSTRUCTORS:
Both Doña Lidia and Doña Everilda are talented weavers from San Antonio Aguas Calientes, the town known for its intricate brocade patterns.
Doña Lidia has been teaching backstrap weaving nationally and internationally for several decades. She started when she was young, helping her mother with classes. She is a wealth of knowledge and a patient teacher with experience in English. Our online classes are taught by Doña Lidia, and we have also developed professional videos for intermediate and advanced brocade. <See those offers here>
Doña Everilda started teaching backstrap weaving with Kakaw in 2022 with increased class requests. When we saw the beautiful brocade she was teaching her daughter, Sucy (who helps us in the office), we just knew she would be an excellent teacher! Doña Everilda has known Mari since "before she was born," as Mari likes to say, since the two families have been friends for multiple generations.
We do not recommend this class for young children.
