Medium Wool Rug in Indigo & Cochineal Gradient 1

//A new one-of-a-kind naturally-dyed  rug!//

This versatile 100% wool rug was first hand-woven in Momostenango using local wool, and then hand-dyed in a natural indigo and cochineal vat at Lake Atitlán. We love working with this natural protein fiber and exploring natural dye variations with our partner dyers. This rug is  a blend of deep rouge tones next to a night sky blue. Where the two dyes meet and overlap there are lovely areas of warm violet. Reminiscent of Mark Rothko's color field paintings.

Rugs in Momostenango are woven on large footlooms, which are managed per family as a source of income. Unfortunately, there are less and less weavers continuing this tradition in the town.

This medium wool rug is special in that both warp and weft are wool and the fibers have been felted together, which is done in the town by washing the rug in a natural hot spring. This felting makes the rug sturdier.

Care:

Machine-washable in a gentle cycle or wool cycle in cold water with gentle detergent. Line dry.

See our blog post for how to minimize washing wool rugs.

For best color protection, use in indirect sunlight as natural dyes will fade with direct sunlight exposure.
