Corte 1: Colotenango

Colotenango is one of the rare towns in Guatemala that weaves traditional cortes (wrap skirts) on a backstrap loom. The result is a thicker weave full of rich brocade patterns. A full corte is made by combining two panels of backstrap-woven textiles. This piece only has one panel, thus it is not a complete corte. It is being sold by our friend Fernando in Chichicastenango.

This textile would be beautiful for home decor as-is or sewn in other forms such as cushions. The material used is a blend of cotton and a bit of rayon. Another exquisite textile treasure from Fernando.

Fernando and his family have a small textile treasure stores in their home town, a place filled with the most beautiful items imaginable. Currently because of travel restrictions due to COVID-19 both nationally and internationally, they have not had any local sales. Thus, the listing of some of the treasures on our site here on our Artisan Direct page.
