Private Class: Backstrap Weaving (in-person) / Contact us to schedule

//This is a private outdoor weaving class held at our studio garden in central Antigua. A great ratio at one teacher per 1-2 students! We can coordinate to have two teachers together to facilitate upto 4 participatns at a time. Depending on the teacher, Spanish, English, and Kaqchikel instruction are possible. The exact address is shared upon registering. Please send us a message via WhatsApp at +502 5191 1991 or email us at hello@kakawdesigns.com to coordinate the date and time. We typically prefer 9:30am-11:30am for best weather.//

We love private weaving sessions! This is the best way to learn and practice the art of backstrap weaving.

This two-hour class includes:

  • Our PDF guide for plain weave, which will be automatically sent to you upon the purchase of this session. If you'd like to get more into the details of supplementary weft brocade or even the advanced double-sided brocade, please let your instructor know.
  • Use of a studio backstrap loom
  • Opportunity to purchase your own backstrap loom. Everything is 20% off when purchased in-person at our studio, making looms affordable starting at 240Q.
  • A small snack and drink

The instructors are able to teach up to two students at a time.

We recommend morning instruction (9:30-11:30) to avoid harsh sun and rain.

MEET THE INSTRUCTORS:

Both Doña Lidia and Doña Everilda are talented weavers from San Antonio Aguas Calientes, the town known for its intricate brocade patterns.

Doña Lidia has been teaching backstrap weaving nationally and internationally for several decades. She started when she was young, helping her mother with classes. She is a wealth of knowledge and a patient teacher with experience in English. Our online classes are taught by Doña Lidia, and we have also developed professional videos for intermediate and advanced brocade. <See those offers here>

Doña Everilda started teaching backstrap weaving with Kakaw in 2022 with increased class requests. When we saw the beautiful brocade she was teaching her daughter, Sucy (who helps us in the office), we just knew she would be an excellent teacher! Doña Everilda has known Mari since "before she was born," as Mari likes to say, since the two families have been friends for multiple generations.

Doña Cristina is a master weaver from Santo Domingo Xenacoj. The style from her town is full of texturized brocade in the form of animals and natural motifs, created by picking up the warp threads one by one. She is proud to share that weaving paid her way through her university degree. During the week, she works as a social worker. Cristina teaches in Spanish and Kaqchikel.

Kids:
We welcome interested creative children from 10 years on for our workshops! Please note that the parent or adult guardian will need to be responsible for a child's participation. Fine motor skills are needed for every class, and children must be able to safely use sharp tools such as scissors and needles. We ask for maximum two children per one adult to ensure safe supervision.

In some cases, we may be able to accept younger children in a private setting with a few modifications to the class, and with the ratio of one adult per child. If interested in this option, please contact us.
