Huipil 63: San Juan Cotzal

//A new Artisan Direct listing from Fernando in Chichicastengo!//

This is a gorgeous vintage huipil (traditional blouse) from San Juan Cotzal, Guatemala, being sold by our friend Fernando in Chichicastenango. The traditional brocade-woven huipiles from San Juan Cotzal feature plenty of brocade figures inspired by nature, especially birds. This piece has been woven with a white cotton base in the traditional three-panel style with gorgeous neckline embroidery. Easy to pair with jeans or a skirt, this piece fits like US size M.

This piece is handwoven with cotton. The two panels show three-selvage weave, with one end cut loose and showing some fray. This is a beautiful work of art to both wear and uses as home adornment. The sides are not sewn shut for this piece, though that can easily be done by hand (let us know if you'd like us to do that for you).

Fernando and his family have a small textile treasure store in their hometown, a place filled with the most beautiful items imaginable. Currently, because of the lasting effects COVID-19 restrictions both nationally and internationally, they have not had many local sales. Thus, the listing of some of the treasures on our site here on our Artisan Direct page.
