Private Class: Backstrap Weaving (in-person) / Contact us to schedule

//This is a private outdoor weaving class held at our studio garden in central Antigua. A great ratio at one teacher per 1-2 students! We can coordinate to have two teachers together to facilitate upto 4 participatns at a time. Depending on the teacher, Spanish, English, and Kaqchikel instruction are possible. The exact address is shared upon registering. Please send us a message via WhatsApp at +502 5191 1991 or email us at hello@kakawdesigns.com to coordinate the date and time. We typically prefer 9:30am-11:30am for best weather.//

We love private weaving sessions! This is the best way to learn and practice the art of backstrap weaving.

This two-hour class includes:

  • Our PDF guide for plain weave, which will be automatically sent to you upon the purchase of this session. If you'd like to get more into the details of supplementary weft brocade or even the advanced double-sided brocade, please let your instructor know.
  • Use of a studio backstrap loom
  • Opportunity to purchase your own backstrap loom. Everything is 20% off when purchased in-person at our studio, making looms affordable starting at 240Q.
  • A small snack and drink

The instructors are able to teach up to two students at a time.

We recommend morning instruction (9:30-11:30) to avoid harsh sun and rain.

MEET THE INSTRUCTORS:

Both Doña Lidia and Doña Everilda are talented weavers from San Antonio Aguas Calientes, the town known for its intricate brocade patterns.

Doña Lidia has been teaching backstrap weaving nationally and internationally for several decades. She started when she was young, helping her mother with classes. She is a wealth of knowledge and a patient teacher with experience in English. Our online classes are taught by Doña Lidia, and we have also developed professional videos for intermediate and advanced brocade. <See those offers here>

Doña Everilda started teaching backstrap weaving with Kakaw in 2022 with increased class requests. When we saw the beautiful brocade she was teaching her daughter, Sucy (who helps us in the office), we just knew she would be an excellent teacher! Doña Everilda has known Mari since "before she was born," as Mari likes to say, since the two families have been friends for multiple generations.

Doña Cristina is a master weaver from Santo Domingo Xenacoj. The style from her town is full of texturized brocade in the form of animals and natural motifs, created by picking up the warp threads one by one. She is proud to share that weaving paid her way through her university degree. During the week, she works as a social worker. Cristina teaches in Spanish and Kaqchikel.

Kids:
We welcome interested creative children from 10 years on for our workshops! Please note that the parent or adult guardian will need to be responsible for a child's participation. Fine motor skills are needed for every class, and children must be able to safely use sharp tools such as scissors and needles. We ask for maximum two children per one adult to ensure safe supervision.

In some cases, we may be able to accept younger children in a private setting with a few modifications to the class, and with the ratio of one adult per child. If interested in this option, please contact us.

Perfect for beginners

As a sewing and fabric lover I had to take a backstrap weaving class with Doña Cristina. Luckily my weaving project was already prepared with the most beautiful colours and pattern. With a lot of patience and humour Cristina taught me all the steps and slowly I started seeing my progress, which is an amazing feeling. The more I improved, the more personal tips Cristina gave me to improve the quality of my weaving. I felt super at ease and relaxed, thanks to Cristinas lovely energy and in this super idillic garden.
100% recommendable, also for beginners.
Don't forget to take a look in the shop, there are so many lovely designs and products.

2 hours of joy

On April 1, 2024 I spent a joyfilled 2 hours with Eve at Kawkaw learning backstrap weaving. Her patience and skill made for a delightful class.
Yes, I had fun. Yes, I will make mistakes while I attempt to do it at home. No, I will not be a master weaver, but joy will fill my thoughts every time I pick up my weaving because of Kawkaw Designs.

Amazing class!

We took a backstrap weaving class with Dona Everilda as a couple earlier this month and had the best time. Everilda was a great teacher, very clear with her instructions and very patient with our mistakes! Our arms were tired by the end of it but we learnt a lot and had a really lovely time. There was a break halfway through the session during which we ate some delicious banana bread and drank cocoa tea. We really enjoyed learning the basics of weaving but also just chatting to Everilda and getting to know her. Also, the venue is amazing, the class took place under the shade of trees in a nice courtyard with a fountain. Thank you Evelyn for setting this up :)

Great class for beginners to get introduced to backstrap weaving

I did this class for fun while passing thru Antigua. I have just started Heddle loom weaving and was keen to see the setup for backstrap weaving. Not gonna lie, having a simple project already warped and started was great as it gave me a chance to sit and both see, and then try, myself. All the ladies are fabulous but I have to really compliment the instructors. So patient when dealing with adults on a system they teach to young kids! Thoroughly enjoyed my two hours and bought one of their beginner backstrap kits to try a project back home in Alaska. Highly recommended. Not intimidating at all and super great to get some hands-on help before going back to the videos.

In love with backstrap weaving

I visited KaKaw designs during my honeymoon and took a few backstrap weaving class with Everlida. I am a beginner and this was my first class learning backstrap weaving. It was fun and informative I bought a backstrap and enrolled in two more courses with her. She is an amazing human being and knows so much about this art form. I practice at home regularly. My husband took the classes with me, he is a computer guy and he even enjoyed learning the backstrap weaving. He made a lovely piece that hangs on the wall. I would highly recommend this course or any of the courses from KaKaw designs. The hospitality is amazing. They brought out snacks and drinks during break time. The garden, where the weaving takes place is beautiful. There is a lovely fountain and many flowers. The studio inside has items for purchase. You can also check out other classes like pom pom making. Highly recommended! ❤️❤️❤️
